From Vasto's belvedere the gaze falls on the "golden gulf": the coast descending toward Punta Aderci, a reserve of cliffs and wild beaches among the Adriatic's finest. The upper town, with the d'Avalos palace and its Neapolitan gardens, recalls the marquises who made it a small capital; here in 1783 was born Gabriele Rossetti, poet and exile, father of Pre-Raphaelite Dante Gabriel.
