Alfedena

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 785 · Postal code: 67030

Below the village lies the necropolis of Aufidena: some fifteen hundred burials between the seventh and the third century before Christ, dug from 1882 onwards and in part gathered in the town's Aufidenate museum. During the German occupation many finds were carried off or destroyed; some of what was taken came back after being restored at the University of Tübingen.

Between 1940 and 1943 the fascist authorities made Alfedena a place of internment for foreign Jewish refugees: sixteen people, one of the largest groups in the province of L'Aquila. After the eighth of September, with the Germans in the village, they all fled. Four were caught in Rome and died at Auschwitz; the others got away.
