Civitella Alfedena

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 303 · Postal code: 67030

Civitella Alfedena was born of an abandonment: when, between the late fourteenth and the early fifteenth century, people left Rocca Intramonti at the foot of the Camosciara, they moved down here. For centuries it lived on sheep and transhumance, and since it did not reach a thousand inhabitants it was kept joined to the comune of Villetta Barrea until 1853, when it got its own back. On the bell tower of the church of the Madonna del Carmine there is still a clock whose face is divided into six hours, as was the custom before Napoleon.

In 1951 the Barrea dam was completed and the water rose: the Sangro became a lake and covered part of the territory, including the old bridge that led to the Via Marsicana, which can still be seen half submerged beside the new one. Today the village lies inside the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park, of which it has been part since the park was founded, and its fame rests on the Apennine wolf: here are the wildlife enclosure and the museum devoted to the animal, and the strict reserve of the Camosciara begins just outside the houses.
