On 26 June Scontrone, a municipality of 590 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates its patrons Saints John and Paul.
In 1991 a local man found on the slopes of Monte Greco a deposit of bones and teeth ten million years old: crocodiles, marsh turtles, a giant insectivore and ruminants no one had ever seen, some with four horns, others with tusk-like canines. The genus carries the name of the village, Scontromeryx.
The cult of Saint Michael the Archangel took the place here of the cult of Hercules: the warrior saint who kills the dragon carried over the attributes of the old hero of the shepherds, and the image stayed the same. In 1968 the village was the set of the Rai serial drawn from Ignazio Silone's novel «Il segreto di Luca».
