Montenero Val Cocchiara

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 558 · Postal code: 86080

In 1039 the Borrello counts seized two villages from the monks of San Vincenzo al Volturno: Mons Niger, which is this one, and Malacocchiara, three miles further on. No trace of the second has ever been found — people are still looking — but its name ended up in the comune's own, which has been called this only since 1880.

The village, 558 residents, looks down on the Pantano della Zittola marsh. At the top, the church of Santa Maria di Loreto opens onto a stone forecourt with benches and baroque scrollwork; down via Marracino stands the house of a stonemason who in 1735 carved his own portrait into it, as a caricature.
