Pizzone

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 335 · Postal code: 86071

After an Arab raiding party laid the valley waste in 881, the abbot of San Vincenzo al Volturno set about repopulating it: between 935 and 981 he brought in settlers from the land of the Marsi, granting them plots on twenty-nine-year leases. Four hamlets came of it — Iannini, Roccasecca, Cerquacupa, Viscurri — of which only ruins are left.

Pizzone, 335 residents, is the westernmost comune in Molise: from here you touch Lazio and you touch Abruzzo, and the territory lies inside the national park. Of the three medieval gates one was called Borea, after the cold wind out of the north; in the church of San Nicola a plaque of 1318 records who had it built.
