Feast of Saint Peter
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Ocre, a municipality of 1,110 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates its patron Saint Peter.
The castle of Ocre appears twice in the same event, and on opposite sides. In 1254 the sources place it among the castles that took part in the founding of L'Aquila, ninety-nine others with it, holding a share of the Quarto di San Giorgio; and also among those spared the demolition ordered for the castles of the area, because it belonged to the court chancellor Gualtieri. What followed treated it as a founder: in 1423 Braccio da Montone stormed the castles that had made the city, and when in March 1424 Ocre dared to rebel he put it to the flames. From then on the settlement moved down for good to Villa San Panfilo, where the town hall still stands.
What was left of the fief changed hands at prices that trace a curve: at the end of the 16th century the Fibbioni had bought it for ten thousand ducats, in 1619 the auction awarded it to Alessandro Pica for nine thousand five hundred, in 1626 the Bonanni paid sixteen thousand and held it until feudalism was abolished in 1806. Below the castle, at Pretola, the monastery of Santo Spirito was the first Cistercian house in the Aterno valley: in 1222 Berardo di Ocre granted the land to the hermit Placido de Vena, in 1248 the house passed to the Cistercians, and the suppression of small convents in 1652 reduced it to a ruin. The 2009 earthquake struck the castle and the old centres of the hamlets again.
