Rocca di Cambio

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 504 · Postal code: 67047

At one thousand four hundred and thirty-four metres it is the highest municipality in the Apennines. It lost its status in 1814, when it became a hamlet of Rocca di Mezzo, and took it back in 1849; what made it known was the mayor Aldo Jacovitti, who in 1965 managed to bring the Giro d'Italia through here.

The earthquake of 6 April 2009 cracked the whole old centre and twisted the bell tower of the collegiate church of San Pietro on its axis; inside, though, the fall of the plaster behind the high altar uncovered a fresco no one knew was there. The abbey of Santa Lucia, a national monument, was reopened ten years later. The village's name comes from Monte Cagno, which stands above it.

Feast of Saint Lucy

📅 Every year, on 13 December (also a smaller celebration on the last Sunday of June)

On 13 December Rocca di Cambio celebrates its patroness Saint Lucy, to whom the town's abbey is dedicated; because of the harsh winter, a scaled-down celebration is also held on the last Sunday of June.
