The village takes its name from the karst hollow it was born in. Below it lay the Roman city of Aveia, and the medieval village was largely built out of its stones: they can still be seen in the walls of the houses. Down on the plain, along the Aterno, the Vestini had their cemetery from the ninth century before Christ.

Fossa took part in the founding of L'Aquila, and paid dearly for its loyalty to the Angevins: in 1423 Braccio da Montone besieged and destroyed the castle, which was never raised again. On the sixth of April 2009 the earthquake killed five people here, and the next day the village was the epicentre of the strongest aftershock. Just outside the houses stands Santa Maria ad Cryptas, with frescoes of the thirteenth century.
