Opi

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 428 · Postal code: 67030

The name may come from oppidum, the fortified town, and the first times it is read are around 1017, when the monastery of Sant'Elia, at the foot of Monte Marsicano, passed to Montecassino. The village sits on a spur among the mountains, and is one of the rainiest and coldest places in Abruzzo.

In the night between 23 and 24 July 1654 an earthquake brought down almost all the houses and killed many people: the village took decades to get back to what it had been. Below the houses there is a quarter called Casette asismiche, the aseismic cottages, built after the Marsica earthquake of 1915. Opi was joined to Pescasseroli at the beginning of the nineteenth century and took back its municipality in 1854; val Fondillo and the Camosciara, which lie in its territory, are the first nucleus of the Abruzzo national park.
