Villetta Barrea

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 652 · Postal code: 67030

They call it the village of the deer, because the deer walk in the streets and in the meadows inside the village. The water came later: in 1951 the Barrea dam was finished and the basin filled, covering a piece of the territory and turning the Sangro into a lake, which today also serves as a reserve for the firefighting aircraft.

In the wall of the church of San Sebastiano a Roman stone was set: it says that a centurion of the twenty-second legion made a gift to Hercules, spending a thousand sesterces. In December 1943, instead, the Germans ordered the village to be evacuated: many of its people ended up at Passignano sul Trasimeno, and in 2014 the two comuni twinned in memory of it.
