Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Pereto celebrates its patron Saint George; since 1970, on 26 December, the living nativity scene is staged.
For a century this village of a few hundred souls gave the diocese of the Marsi its bishops: five Maccafani one after another, one of whom was also the first bishop of Lanciano and another governor of Todi and Cesena; and a man of Pereto, Antonio, was minister general of the Franciscans. Their palace is still in the village.
Up on the mountain, at the boundary with Rocca di Botte, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna dei Bisognosi, which tradition says was built in 608. Inside there are a Virgin carved in olive wood that came from Seville, the processional crucifix that pope Boniface IV is said to have left in thanks for his recovery, and frescoes of the late fifteenth century with heaven and hell. On the comune's arms there is a pear tree: thirteen leaves and seven pears.
