Rocca di Botte

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 830 · Postal code: 67066

The name comes neither from a prince nor from a family, but from a cistern: the spring halfway up Monte San Fabrizio, which carried water down to the village, was covered by a barrel vault, a volta a botte. In the bull of Pope Clement III of 1188 the place is called Rocca de Butta. Some have brought in a Thracian prince named Bitty, but scholars think it unlikely.

Here, in the eleventh century, was born Saint Peter the Hermit, whom they called the wandering knight: he died at Trevi in Lazio and was proclaimed a saint on the first of October 1215 by the bishop of Anagni. The church that bears his name stands next to the house where he was born. On the boundary with Pereto is the sanctuary of the Madonna dei Bisognosi, with heaven and hell painted inside.
