Riofreddo

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 762 · Postal code: 00020

The via Valeria runs through the village: its oldest stretch was opened in 307 before Christ, and just outside stands the bridge that bears the name of Nerva, built under that emperor. The name of the place translates the Latin Rivus frigidus, and in the municipal arms there are the stream and the column: Riofreddo was a fief of the Colonna from the thirteenth century, so much so that it gave its name to a branch of the family.

In the oratory of the Santissima Annunziata there is a cycle of frescoes of 1422 that has come down to us whole, a rare thing in Lazio. In the palace Blasi-Roberti Gaetano Donizetti stayed for a short time, and the square carries his name. In 1997, during the attempt to free the kidnapped industrialist Giuseppe Soffiantini, the special forces officer Samuele Donatoni was killed here in a gunfight.
