Feast of Sant'Egidio
📅 Every year, on 1 September
On 1 September Camerata Nuova, a municipality of 460 inhabitants in the province of Rome, celebrates its patron Sant'Egidio.
The name comes from the camerae, the houses partly cut into the rock of which the old village was made, and as Camorata it appears for the first time in the Subiaco register of the eleventh century. In 1096 the castle, which the sources call Rocca in Camerata, was given to the abbey of Montecassino by the countess of Carsoli Aldegrina, widow of the count of the Marsi Rainaldo, who had died during the first crusade; the following year Pope Urban II confirmed it among the abbot's holdings.
Today's village is new in earnest. On 9 January 1859 a fire destroyed old Camerata, perched on a limestone crag four hundred metres higher up, and the inhabitants rebuilt it lower down, at the mouth of the valley: up there the ruins remain. The new village was called Pio Camerata, in honour of Pius IX, until 1870, and in 1872 it took the name it bears now. Within its territory stands Monte Autore, the highest peak in the metropolitan city of Rome.
