Feast of Saint Felix and Saint Elizabeth
📅 Every year, on 2 July
On 2 July Cervara di Roma, a municipality of 472 inhabitants in the province of Rome, celebrates its patrons Saint Felix of Rome and Saint Elizabeth.
Cervara is the highest village in the metropolitan city of Rome, and the second in Lazio after Filettino: it sits on the western slopes of the Simbruini, and its old centre can only be reached on foot, climbing. The first document that names it is dated 21 August 884, when the duke of Spoleto gave the territory to the Benedictines of Subiaco, and with the monks the village stayed for centuries. Not without violence: in 1273 Pelagio da Jenne seized Cervara and killed the monks; he was captured and died at Subiaco.
In 1511 bishop Pompeo tried to take the village, taking advantage of the false news that Pope Julius II had died, and the pope, alive, removed him from office; in 1592 the brigand Marco Sciarra arrived; on 7 June 1944 German troops killed three civilians, and a monument in the village remembers them. The patron saint, on the other hand, was born of a word: beneath the high altar lies the body of a martyr given by Pius VI and found in the catacombs of San Callisto, and beside it was a stone reading Felix, so they called him Saint Felix. Linguists have taken something from here too: certain sound patterns of the Aniene valley are called cervarole.
