The village, 1,129 residents, sits at 1,051 metres, on the pass where some place the end of the central Apennines and the start of the southern ones. The state road 17, Napoleonic in date, runs through it, and since the 1970s the 652 as well: anyone coming up from Campania towards Roccaraso and the Abruzzo parks passes this way.
Of the Carafa castle and the church beside it only ruins are left, wrecked by wars and earthquakes. The mother church of San Bartolomeo, built in 1717, still keeps eighteenth-century frescoes; of those the 1984 earthquake took away, a few photographs remain. The Sannitico in the name arrived after unification, to avoid confusion with Rionero in Vulture.
