Città Sant'Angelo

Province: Pescara · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 14,379 · Postal code: 65013

Città Sant'Angelo has 14,379 inhabitants on a hill eighteen kilometres from Pescara, and its people are still called angolani, from the ancient Angulum that Pliny names among the towns of the Vestini — even though scholars think that Angulum was more probably at Spoltore, nearby. The angel of the name and of the coat of arms, Saint Michael killing the dragon, was left instead by the Lombards, who rebuilt the town from scratch on this hill.

The first document is from 875: the emperor Louis II grants a privilege to the monastery of Casauria at the place called Civitate S. Angeli, where there were a castle and a port. In 1239 the justiciar of Frederick II razed it to the ground because it was Guelph and too firmly on the pope's side; then the same emperor let the survivors rebuild it, and from that comes the spindle plan of the old centre, one long street crossed by dead-end lanes which here are called li ruve. In 1699 the marquisate was bought by a woman, Lucrezia Camerlengo, for a hundred and thirty thousand ducats.
