Villa Celiera

Province: Pescara · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 747 · Postal code: 65010

In 1191 countess Margherita had the abbey of Santa Maria di Casanova founded below the village; it became the first Cistercian house in Abruzzo and grew powerful enough to hold lands as far as the Tremiti islands and the castles of the villages around. The name comes from it too: villa, the village, and Celiera from the Latin cellarium, the store-room.

When the monastery was suppressed in 1807 the people of the next village came and took its wooden organ and its statue of the Virgin for their own church, since the place was falling down; Edward Lear drew the ruins on his Abruzzo journey. Villa Celiera became a comune of its own only in 1913. Of the great abbey the tower and a few arches remain, put back up after the earthquake of 2009.
