Mosciano Sant'Angelo

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 9,251 · Postal code: 64023

Mosciano Sant'Angelo has 9,251 inhabitants on the Teramo hill belt that slopes down towards the Adriatic, between the Salinello and the Tordino. The name is documented from the year 897, when a deed of the bishopric of Teramo lists landed property called "res Musiano": it comes from a Latin personal name, Mussius. The "Sant'Angelo" is instead a bureaucratic addition of 1863, taken from the patron of the parish church so as not to confuse the town with its namesakes.

The Benedictine monastery around which the village formed was a cell of Montecassino, and important enough to appear among the possessions depicted on the bronze doors that Abbot Desiderius had made in 1065; in its place today stands the Franciscan convent of Santa Felicita and the Seven Brothers. In the town, in front of the church of San Michele Arcangelo, is the tower the Acquaviva had built in 1397 by friar Matteo di Morro d'Oro: it was a watchtower, and now it serves as bell tower and clock. That is the fate of nearly all the towers here, which are many and end up absorbed into the houses or into the belvedere.
