Saint Athanasius, patron of the Belvedere di Ripattoni
📅 Every year, on 2 May
Bellante celebrates Saint Athanasius on 2 May.
Bellante has 7,160 inhabitants on the hills of the Teramo province. The town's tower does two jobs: it is the civic tower and it is the bell tower of the church of Santa Croce. On its top is a weathervane with the initials of the four cardinal points, and on its two sides the cross on one and on the other the town's coat of arms with the inscription "Universitas Bellanti", the Latin name for the community.
In the chapel next to the church is a Madonna of Mercy in polychrome terracotta of the sixteenth century, enthroned with the Child. The story goes that the noblewoman Giovanna d'Aragona wanted it as an ex voto for having freed the town from a contagion, and that the Virgin has her face. But the story really told in Bellante is another one: the Child is said not to be the original, because brigands carried the real one off and it ended up in the arms of the Madonna dei Lumi of Civitella del Tronto. It may be parish rivalry, and yet the Child is of coarser workmanship than the Mother and has different colours. The statue goes out in procession once every twenty-five years, and on that day it is not rare to see women taking off their gold to give it to the Madonna.
