Morro d'Oro

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 3,628 · Postal code: 64020

The name arrived by decree, and the town council debated the apostrophe. The old forms were Murus, Murrum, Morrum, and between the sixteenth and the eighteenth century the papers write Moro, then Murro, then Morra. The present name was fixed by a royal decree of 1863, on a council resolution which, «considering that the Comune has always been abundant for the fertility of its lands» and that the epithet Morro d'Oro was ancient, laid down that the added word had to be written with an apostrophe.

The oldest document is of 1021: a donation by Adelberto De Aprutio to Montecassino, in which the estate of Muro appears together with a castle already called old. Two churches keep the memory of the territory: the abbey of Santa Maria di Propezzano, attested in the middle of the tenth century although tradition pushes it back to 715, preserved almost intact in its original structure; and the church of the Santissimo Salvatore, rebuilt in 1331, beneath which an archaeological route shows the tombs and the grain pits. In the Piana dei Cesari, moreover, between 2008 and 2010 the walls came to light of the working part of a large Italic-Roman estate, more than four hectares, which made oil, wine and garum.
