Cortino

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 683 · Postal code: 64040

Until the Napoleonic reorganisation Cortino was one of some thirty villages of the Stato di Roseto, held by the Acquaviva dukes of Atri; it became a comune when that state was divided up. The name is written Corte in a donation of 1029 to the church of Teramo. Above the village stands one of the rare pure fir woods of the Apennines, spread out like an amphitheatre.

Three of its hamlets, Pagliaroli, Padula and Macchia Tornella, still have separate administrations of their own, left from the common lands. The mountain lived for centuries with brigandage: Marco Sciarra at the end of the sixteenth century, and in 1799 the bands raised against the French by a parish priest, don Donato de Donatis. The communal archive was almost entirely destroyed in 1943.
