🎉 Patron saint festival

Feast of Saint Nicholas

📍 Craco · Matera · Basilicata

On the second Saturday of October Craco celebrates Saint Nicholas. It is the feast of a town whose old centre has stood empty since the 1960s, emptied by a landslide and left a ghost town.

The patron of Craco is Saint Nicholas and the feast falls on the second Saturday of October.

It carries a story unlike any other. In 1963 the historic centre began to empty because of a landslide, and by the early 1980s it was a ghost town: the houses vacant, the alleys still. That very condition has made Craco a destination, and the town goes on celebrating its patron even though the old settlement has no inhabitants left.
