Stigliano

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 4,685 · Postal code: 75018

The mother church of Stigliano holds the largest altarpiece in Basilicata: a sixteenth-century polyptych attributed to Simone da Firenze, six metres high, with the Madonna at the centre and saints, angels and God the Father around her. It was not made for this church: it came from the convent of Sant'Antonio, pulled down in the nineteenth century.

In Sant'Antonio a wooden crucifix by padre Umile da Petralia is venerated. Tradition holds that on 1 October 1656, when plague had cut the town to about 1600 souls, a flash and a roar filled the church and the face of Christ, until then bowed to the left, turned to the right: from that day the contagion stopped. Stigliano stands at 909 metres, the highest town in the Matera province, and counts 4,685 residents.
