Ferrandina

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 8,973 · Postal code: 75013

Ferrandina's coat of arms carries six F's, and they are an acrostic: Fridericus Ferranti Filius Ferrandinam Fabbricare Fecit — Frederick, son of Ferrante, had Ferrandina built. It was he who in 1494 gave the town his father's name, King Ferrante of Aragon.

Here the Dominicans set up a wool industry: the cloth that came out of it was called ferlandina and was sought all over the Kingdom of Naples; in 1546 the friars raised the dome of San Domenico to show how much they counted. Maria Barbella came from here, who in 1895 became the second woman sentenced to the electric chair in the United States, and never went to it. The population is 8,973.
