Miglionico

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,543 · Postal code: 75010

The castle is called del Malconsiglio, the Bad Council, and it earned the name: in 1485 the barons of the Kingdom gathered here to conspire against Ferdinando I of Naples. The council turned out to be a bad one, and the fortress has carried the verdict ever since.

On the town's coat of arms there are seven Ms, standing for Milo Magnus Miles Me Munivit Magnis Muris: Milo, great soldier, fortified me with great walls. Seven are also the towers of the castle, some square and older, others round. The original entrance faced south: the earthquake of 1857 brought it down. There are 2,543 residents.
