Colobraro

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,342 · Postal code: 75021

Around here Colobraro is not called by name: they say chille paìse, that village, because naming it is supposed to bring bad luck. The story goes that in the forties a notable told a meeting that if he was lying the chandelier should fall on his head; and the chandelier fell. There is no proof.

In 1952 Ernesto de Martino came here with his team, and told of two misfortunes: the car broke down on the climb, and the repair cost 23,000 lire; then the piper who was to guide them fell from a lorry and died, an hour before the meeting. From the expedition remains a photograph by Franco Pinna, long taken for a masciara's portrait: the woman was Maria Francesca Fiorenza, a peasant and a weaver. There are 1,342 residents.
