Feast of Saint Nicholas the Great
📅 Every year, on 9 May
On 9 May Guardia Perticara celebrates Saint Nicholas the Great, in the church that bears his name, in the Val d'Agri.
The name comes from the guardiole: seven little towers set to defend the territory, and one of them ended up on the coat of arms. The town has come close to disappearing more than once: in 1657 the plague took away more than five hundred people, and the earthquake of 1857 killed 85.
After the earthquake of 1980 Guardia Perticara chose not to rebuild in modern style: the restoration brought the old centre back to its medieval, stone form. It is among the most beautiful villages in Italy and since 2011 it has held the Touring Club's orange flag. There are 580 residents.
