Cirigliano

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 361 · Postal code: 75010

Two kilometres from the town, among the olives, there is a grotto dedicated to the Madonna: a repentant brigand dug it out of the living rock. The rest of Cirigliano is all stone, pietra di Cirigliano, still quarried here, and it made the castle, the palazzi, the houses and the streets.

The castle has a tower with an oval base and beside it the chapel of the Addolorata, with a seventeenth-century Pietà inside a decorated wooden shrine. The Coppola bought it in 1595 from the Iannellis for 13,000 ducats; in 1750 it passed to the barons Formica, who own it still. There are 361 residents.
