Gorgoglione

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,053 · Postal code: 75010

On 13 June, at the feast of Sant'Antonio, the animals go in the procession too: oxen, donkeys, mules and the household beasts. It ends on the church forecourt with the blessing and with the blessed bread handed out to everyone.

The town sits on top of a rock wall forty metres high, and at the foot of that wall opens a cave where in the years of brigandage the brigands hid: inside there is still the dripping, with stalactites a few centimetres long. The sandstone from here has a name of its own, pietra di Gorgoglione. There are 1,053 residents.
