Banzi

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,406 · Postal code: 85010

In 1969 the archaeologist Mario Torelli excavated at Banzi a templum auguraculum in terris: not a building, but an area traced on the ground from which the augurs read the sky. It is the only one of its kind known.

From here too comes the Tabula Bantina, an engraved bronze sheet that is the longest and most complex text in the Oscan language among those written in Latin characters; today it is in the Naples museum. In 1089 pope Urban II consecrated the church of the Benedictine abbey, and on that occasion met here the sons of Guiscard and thirty-three bishops, to prepare the council that would be held a few days later at Melfi. There are 1,406 residents.
