Forenza

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,209 · Postal code: 85023

The name comes from Forentum, the Samnite colony Horace, Livy and Pliny mention, but today's town is not there. The people of ancient Forentum, no longer able to hold off attacks, moved to a hill not far away and started again around the ninth century: the old site is now called San Martino.

That hill is the one they call the balcony of Puglia, because from up there you can see the Tavoliere as far as the Gargano. On 14 February 1892 the peasants rose against the family tax and set fire to the town hall; the government sent a battalion of bersaglieri, who camped in the Tufaroli palace, and a good many were killed. There are 2,209 residents.
