Palazzo San Gervasio

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 5,027 · Postal code: 85026

The town is called Palazzo because there really was a palace: the palatium Robert Guiscard had built around 1050, later done over to a design by Frederick II. The San Gervasio came afterwards, from the saint of a small church nearby, and the double name has only been official since 1863.

Nineteenth-century scholars placed the Fons Bandusiae here, the spring Horace sang about, and the aqueduct Herodes Atticus had built to carry water as far as Canosa crossed this territory. In the town, the d'Errico palace holds the picture gallery and library put together by Camillo d'Errico. There are 5,027 residents.
