Saint Anthony and the convent's frescoes
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Oppido Lucano celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua in the convent dedicated to him, founded in 1482, which holds a cycle of 16th-century frescoes by Giovanni Todisco.
From Oppido came Giovanni, who in the Norman period turned Jew and took the name Obadiah the Proselyte. A traveller and a musician, he was the first to write down the chants of the Jewish tradition in Gregorian musical notation, the one he had learned as a cleric: the melodies of one religion set down in the alphabet of the other.
The town lies on the flanks of Montrone, which below its summit holds a Lucanian necropolis of the sixth century BC. Of the Norman castle, put up between 1047 and 1051, only ruins are left; the church of Sant'Antuono is cut into the rock. There are 3,860 residents.
