Genzano di Lucania

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 5,915 · Postal code: 85013

The name comes from Pagus Gentianum, a Roman settlement its people abandoned to escape malaria, moving to where the town stands today. The relationship with water has since turned around: Genzano's territory, the largest in the province of Potenza at 207 square kilometres, now holds two big reservoirs.

The town comes in two parts: the old one on its spur, with the lanes, and the new one on the plateau. Emigration helped empty the first — between 1864 and 1920 more than two thousand people left Genzano for the Americas — and then came the earthquake of 1980. There are 5,915 residents now, and this is the only comune in the province that borders the province of Bari.
