At Calda there are caves where small groups of people lived for more than 6000 years, from the Mesolithic on, around 8000 BC. In the same place sulphur and magnesium springs rise, and in the thirties a spa was built over them: the same corner of the valley, ten thousand years apart.
The town sits at 888 metres at the foot of Monte Alpi, which has three summits — Santa Croce, Punta del Corvo and Pizzo Falcone — and matters so much here that the coat of arms carries three mountains with three stars. Latronico reads in two halves, Capadavutu up top and Capabbasciu below; there are 4,748 residents.
