"I was born where Vulture rumbles": Horace came into the world here in 65 BC, and Venosa does not forget — the house tradition assigns him stands between the Roman baths and the centre's streets. A first-rank Roman city, it keeps an archaeological park with amphitheatre and, beside it, Basilicata's most haunting monument: the Incompiuta.
The abbey of the Trinity was meant to double in size and was never finished: open-air columns and portals, reusing Roman spolia, compose a roofless cathedral. The Jewish catacombs on Maddalena hill tell of a community flourishing in the early Middle Ages. Aglianico in the glass, naturally.
