Maschito

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,730 · Postal code: 85020

In September 1943 a popular anti-fascist rising broke out at Maschito, and for a few weeks the town gave itself a name of its own: the Republic of Maschito, one of the first partisan republics born of the Resistance.

The town had been made by Albanians, who arrived after the fall of Kruja and then from Koroni in 1533, and Arbëreshë is still spoken here. The Byzantine rite lasted until 1628, when the bishop of Melfi forbade it. In the church of the Caroseno there is a fresco of the Madonna of 1558, brought back to light in 1930 during restoration work. There are 1,730 residents.
