Feast of Saint Gianuario
📅 Every year, on 26 August
On 26 August Marsico Nuovo celebrates Saint Gianuario, bishop and martyr, whose remains were found under the rubble of a church and taken to the co-cathedral in 1827.
When the Roman city of Grumentum, down in the valley, ceased to exist, its bishopric did not die with it: in 1054 the episcopal see was moved up here, to Marsico. The town sits at 865 metres on three hills looking over the Val d'Agri — Civita, the highest, with the old centre, and below it Portello and Casale.
In 1647, when Masaniello's revolt reached this far, prince Francesco Pignatelli had to flee and a dozen courtiers were killed by the crowd. The name, meanwhile, remains a puzzle: perhaps from the Latin maricetum, a marshy place, perhaps from the Byzantine Martzikon, a fortified settlement. There are 4,358 residents.
