Sasso di Castalda

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 831 · Postal code: 85050

Since 2017 there have been two Tibetan bridges over the ravine, one of 95 metres and one of 300 in a single span; the bigger one runs 120 metres above the bottom. They call it the Ponte alla Luna, and you buy a ticket to cross.

In the church of the Immacolata there is an eighteenth-century bust of Sant'Emidio, the saint invoked against earthquakes: in country that shakes, it was a precaution. The town was called simply Sasso until 1863, and it is first named in a document of 1163, when it was a Norman stronghold. There are 831 residents.

Saint Roch, patron of a town now drawing visitors for its Moon Bridge

📅 Every year, on 16 August

Sasso di Castalda celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August, in the church dedicated to him; the town, called Petra Castalda in medieval documents, is now also known for the Ponte alla Luna, a complex of two suspension bridges inaugurated in 2017.
