Brienza

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 4,082 · Postal code: 85050

Between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century a mass emigration took much of Brienza to the Americas. In Buenos Aires the brienzani settled in Mataderos, the barrio everyone also calls Nueva Chicago, while others went to Chicago itself; the Asociación Italiana Brienza still holds that community together.

The Caracciolo castle sits on a spur dropping sheer to the Pergola and commands the Melandro valley: a Norman core, enlarged by the Angevins and reworked by the Caracciolo. Here, on 8 December 1748, Mario Pagano was born, a jurist and one of the leaders of the Neapolitan Republic: he was hanged in Naples in 1799. There are 4,082 residents.
