Calvello

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,953 · Postal code: 85010

In 1820 the town doctor, Carlo Mazziotta, put himself at the head of the Carbonari insurgents. The following year, inside the castle, the court martial that dealt summary justice to them was set up: it is the episode Calvello remembers above all others.

The documents call the castle castellum in 1089, castrum in the time of Frederick II, who listed it among the twenty-nine castles of Basilicata to be kept in repair, and palazzo when the Carafa were living in it. Lower down is the Sant'Antuono bridge, a single stone arch raised at the start of the thirteenth century by local craftsmen under the direction of the Benedictines. There are 1,953 residents.
