Saint James and the Mascio
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Pietrapertosa celebrates Saint James; in June, instead, comes the Mascio, the tree rite dedicated to Saint Anthony, with the tree cut on his feast day.
Pietrapertosa is built on bare rock, wedged into every cranny of it, and climbs along a single street up to the castle. Above the castle there is a natural arch that served as a lookout; you get there by steps cut into the boulder, worn down by time and by feet. The old name was Pietraperciata, pierced stone, for the hole you can see in a great crag.
At 1,088 metres it is the highest comune in Basilicata. In the convent of San Francesco, founded in 1474, there is an Apparition of the Child to Sant'Antonio painted in 1631 by Giovanni De Gregorio, il Pietrafesa. From the town starts the Volo dell'Angelo, a cable strung as far as Castelmezzano. There are 1,108 residents.
