The patron of Pietrapertosa is Saint James, celebrated on 25 July: the mother church, beneath the spires of the Lucanian Dolomites, is dedicated to him, Saint James the Greater.
The village's most distinctive feast, though, falls in June: on the Sunday after the 13th the Mascio is celebrated, a tree rite dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua — which is why the tree is felled on 13 June itself, the saint's day.
