Albano di Lucania

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,474 · Postal code: 85010

In 1956 Ernesto de Martino came to Albano with his ethnographic expedition: from 31 July to 17 August he stayed here studying folk songs and the funeral lament. The following year he returned, from 15 May to 10 June, for a survey of healers and the people who went to them; that work ended up in a chapter of Sud e magia.

Around the town the rock takes shapes that have names of their own: the Rocca del cappello is a monolith with a boulder on top that looks like a hat, and there is a monolithic carving they call the devil's seat. In 1983 the Seroto excavations turned up five tombs of the fourth century BC, the dead lying on their backs with their heads turned east. There are 1,474 residents.
