Campomaggiore

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 851 · Postal code: 85010

The old town is called the city of utopia: late eighteenth century, a chessboard plan drawn by Giovanni Patturelli, a pupil of Vanvitelli, the church and the count's palace facing each other, and to every family that moved in a plot of land to plant with olives or vines.

But the site was marshy: on 2 February 1885 a landslide carried it away, and Campomaggiore Vecchio is a ghost town today. The new one was rebuilt five kilometres further on, and they kept the chessboard. The square is called dei Voti after the pledge the first sixteen families made to the Rendina on 20 November 1741. There are 851 residents.
