Lavello celebrates Saint Maurus the martyr on 2 May; the northernmost municipality of Basilicata stands on a ridge above the Crapelotto stream, and its origins trace back to the ancient Daunian-Roman settlement of Forentum.

The patron saint of Lavello is Saint Maurus the martyr, celebrated on 2 May.

The town has very ancient origins, attested by the discovery of the remains of an Iron Age village, and originated from the Daunian-Roman settlement of Forentum. The original nucleus arose on a steep-sided ridge, cut by the upper reaches of the Crapelotto stream, a right tributary of the Ofanto; the town later expanded with a grid layout along the Appulo-Lucanian state road, becoming the northernmost municipality of Basilicata.

Among the most important religious buildings is the church of Sant'Anna, built in 1537 by Donna Caterina Caracciolo, wife of the marquis of Lavello Don Girolamo del Tufo, and rebuilt in the 18th century on a 14th-century layout: it preserves a late-16th-century Annunciation by the Neapolitan painters Antonio and Costantino Stabile. Buried beneath the mother church are Donna Isabella Caracciolo and her husband Don Mauro Caracciolo of the princes of Torella, duke of Lavello.
