San Costantino Albanese

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 778 · Postal code: 85030

Here the Byzantine rite has never been lost. San Costantino was founded in 1534 by Albanian refugees fleeing the fall of Koroni, and since then mass has been celebrated in the Greek rite, Arbëreshë is spoken every day, and the comune uses it in official acts and on the road signs.

In the mother church the iconostasis is of 1998, with the twelve feasts of the Byzantine calendar painted by the Albanian iconographer Josif Droboniku and his wife Prifti. On the door of Palazzo Pace, instead, is the family's coat of arms: two embracing twins, one with a steelyard and one with an olive crown, above a phrase in Greek taken from the Psalms, justice and peace have embraced. There are 778 residents.
