Terranova di Pollino

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,324 · Postal code: 85030

Above the town the road crosses an old barrier: there the limestone split, and through that crack, the Garavina gorge, the waters of a small glacial lake drained away. On the bed of that lake stand, today, the houses of the Paraturo district.

Terranova was born in the sixteenth century as the forward point of the agricultural colonisation of the Pignatelli, princes of Noia: it was called Terranovella di Noia, that is, land newly settled, and the name stayed with it until the nineteenth century. In the parish church the main door is of Bosnian pine, the tree that stands for the Pollino. There are 1,324 residents.

Saint Francis of Paola and the loricato pine door

📅 Every year, on 2 April

On 2 April Terranova di Pollino celebrates Saint Francis of Paola; the parish church dedicated to him still holds the main door in loricato pine wood from the original building.
